There are many options on what materials to use. The cheapest alternative would be to cut out butterflies from paper and position them on the wall with a piece of tape, then trace around them and paint like I did. You could also stick them up on a more matte wall paint and enjoy them as is, or make a stencil to paint from. There is no need to paint the butterflies first if you plan to trace them and paint the wall. I thought they would stick, otherwise I would have put them up pink just for tracing around.
